3 Easy Steps to Transition

Transitioning out of swaddling can be challenging — which is why the Love To Dream Transition Bag is designed to make this milestone feel easier. With the same cosy, secure feel of a swaddle, the Transition Bag features zip-off wings that let you gradually introduce arms-free sleep at your baby’s pace. Follow these three simple steps to transition out of swaddling with confidence:

  1. One arm at a time: Begin by unzipping one wing to gently introduce arms-free sleep while maintaining a familiar feeling of comfort and security.
  2. Both arms free: Once your baby has settled into the new routine, unzip the second wing to allow more freedom of movement. It’s normal for this stage to take a few nights to adjust.
  3. Move on from swaddling: When your baby is comfortable sleeping with arms and legs free, transition to a swaddle-free routine by moving into a sleep bag.

When To Stop Swaddling

If your baby is showing one or more of these signs, then it’s time to transition to “arms-free” sleeping. Babies will generally begin to show these signs between 2–6 months of age.

You should always consult your GP or paediatrician about your baby’s motor development if you’re unsure. Here are some signs to look out for to indicate it’s time to stop swaddling your baby for sleep:

  • Starting to roll over during playtime
  • Using hands to push up during tummy time
  • Decreased or no startle reflex
  • Lifting their legs and flopping them to the side
  • Ability to escape out of a traditional swaddle
  • Resisting being swaddled traditionally

Sleeps like a dream

"We live in Florida but drop the house to 68 degrees at night. My girl loves to be warm and this 2. 5 TOG transition bag is perfect. She’s 10 months and sleeps with her arms out. Love to Dream swaddles have won our families hearts. Happy sleepers in this household. 🙌"

Great saddle

"We’ve absolutely loved the Love to Dream Swaddle Up Transition Bag. The 1. 5 TOG Olive Twigs design is beautiful and the fabric feels so soft and high quality. It’s made transitioning from swaddling so much easier and has really helped our little one sleep more comfortably and settle quicker at bedtime. I also love that it allows safe movement while still keeping baby feeling secure and cosy. The quality has held up really well after washing too. Definitely one of our favourite sleep products and something I’d happily recommend to other parents! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐"

Karina W. (5/5)

Fixed my 8 week olds sleep instantly

"I could never get my little one to sleep on her back but from the first day I put her in the love to dream swaddle sleep sack she’s slept without an issue. She’s so comfy in it that she’ll even just relax in there and then sometimes put herself to sleep which is an absolute saviour on hard days!"

Nishaben V. (5/5)

We have used the LTD

"We have used the LTD swaddles, and sleep sacks since birth. I have multiple brands and LTD are the only ones I use. After many washes and wears they still look and feel brand new, the design isn’t bulky like some brands while still maintaining warmth and comfort for my little one. The swaddles were perfect when she was little and provide a fast an easy solution when needing to swaddle a restless baby, the two way zip makes middle of the night nappy changes so quick and easy. Then when we moved to the 2in1 transition swaddle it made the transition from arms in to arms out so quick simple and easy! If you’re tossing up between LTD and other brands I would highly recommended LTD!!"

Megan B. (5/5)

"Brilliant design and fit for the ultimate swaddled feeling for our baby, have used these with all our babies and they should be a must on everyone’s checklist when pregnant! We’re due baby number 3 and the quality means we can re use and store away, 100% worth the buy"

Paige E. (5/5)

My anterior placenta starfish

"My baby was an anterior placenta baby, so her hands were always in front of her face. She hates to be swaddled with her arms down. I found this and it is amazing! She gets to keep her hands up and away from her face. She sleeps soundly in it! I have two now! Great for colder weather as well. When she wears it i call her my little star fish 😆 you’ll understand when you see your baby in it its adorable 🥰 highly recommend"

Laura M. (5/5)

Fabulous

"My little premature baby loves a swaddle since the day she was born, had a tiny one to start and is now on a transitional one as we’re expecting her to roll any day now! Colour is gorgeous and the fabric stays so soft after washing"

Q&A

Transition Bag FAQs

When should I stop swaddling my baby?

It is time to stop swaddling as soon as your baby shows signs of being able to roll over.

Other indicators include kicking their legs up high, pushing up on their hands during tummy time, or reaching for their toes. At this stage, it is safer to gradually transition to an "arms-out" sleep solution.

How do I transition my baby from swaddling?

The Swaddle Up™ Transition Bag makes the milestone of transitioning from swaddling easy.

It features a versatile 2-in-1 design with zip-off wings to take you from swaddle to arms-free sleep. You can start by removing one wing to let one arm out, then the other a few nights later.

Once both wings are removed, it becomes a sleeveless sleep bag, providing a familiar sleep cue while allowing for safer, free movement.

When is my baby ready for arms out sleeping?

Your baby is ready to transition to arms out sleeping when they start showing signs of rolling.

They might be kicking their legs up high, pushing up on their hands during tummy time, or reaching for their toes. At this stage, it is safer to transition to an "arms-out" sleep solution.
