What Is a Baby Sleeping Bag?

A baby sleeping bag is a wearable blanket. It zips around your little one, so there is nothing loose in the cot and no covers kicked off in the night. You might also know them as sleep sacks.

Sleeveless, Long Sleeve or Footed?
- Sleeveless: for warmer rooms, or little ones who run warm.
- Long sleeve: keeps arms covered on cooler nights, so you need fewer layers underneath.

A babygrow can be swapped for long-sleeve, long-leg pyjamas. Between two ratings? Choose the lower TOG and add a layer underneath.
Finding the Right Size
Classic Sleep Bags come in 6-18 months and 18-36 months. Footed Sleep Bags come in 6-12 months, 12-24 months, 24-36 months, 3 years and 4 years. The neck and armholes should sit snugly, so your little one cannot slip down inside. Between sizes? Check our size guide.

Younger Than 6 Months?
Newborns start in the Swaddle Up™ (Stage 1). When your baby shows signs of rolling, the Swaddle Up™ Transition Bag (Stage 2) helps them move to arms-free sleep one wing at a time. Once both wings zip off, it works as a sleeveless sleeping bag.

Why use a sleeping bag instead of blankets?
A sleeping bag stays on all night, so there are no loose blankets in the cot and no wake-ups from kicked-off covers.
What TOG sleeping bag does my baby need?
Check the nursery temperature, then match it to the TOG table above. A room thermometer is more reliable than how the room feels to you.
What should my baby wear under a sleeping bag?
It depends on the TOG and the room. In a 1.0 TOG at 22°C, a babygrow is enough. In a 2.5 TOG at 16°C, add a long-sleeve bodysuit under the babygrow. Keep your baby’s head uncovered.
When can my baby start using a sleeping bag?
Our sleeping bags start at 6 months, for babies who sleep arms-free. Before that, the Swaddle Up™ and Transition Bag support each stage.
Should I choose sleeveless or long sleeve?
Long sleeve suits cooler rooms and babies who like their arms covered. Sleeveless suits warmer rooms, or babies who run warm.
How do I know if my baby is too hot or too cold?
Feel the back of their neck or their tummy. Hands and feet often feel cool, so they are not a good guide.
