Finding the right TOG rating and dressing your baby appropriately for the temperature can be confusing. Every baby feels hot and cold differently, ambient temperatures fluctuate, and layering impacts thermal effectiveness. It's not a one-size-fits-all approach, but understanding these factors can help.
At Love to Dream we use the industry-recognised measurement system, called TOG. TOG stands for Thermal Overall Grade and helps simplify the process of choosing the right garment/s for your baby. Put simply: The lower the TOG rating, the lighter the fabric. The higher the TOG rating, the warmer the fabric.
The clothing guide link below provides with guidelines around how to dress your baby/toddler based on the room temperature. It is only a guide. All babies are different. The number of clothing layers may vary according to a baby’s health, their physiology, and the room temperature in the room. The caregiver must determine what is suitable. We recommend that carers always monitor the temperature of the room & the child’s comfort. It is important to check your baby regularly to ensure that they are comfortable and that they do not overheat.

A TOG rating is a unit of measurement for the thermal insulation of clothing and bedding. The lower the TOG rating (like 0.2), the thinner the fabric, making it ideal for warm rooms that need more airflow. A higher TOG rating (like 2.5 or 3.5) indicates a thicker fabric, with more insulation suited for colder environments.
For warmer rooms between 24°C and 27°C, a 0.2 TOG garment is the ideal lightweight choice. As the temperature moves to a comfortable moderate range of 20°C to 24°C, the 1.0 TOG serves as a versatile all-year option. For cooler rooms between 16°C and 20°C, a padded 2.5 TOG provides necessary warmth, while our thickest 3.5 TOG is specifically designed for chilly nights where the room temperature falls below 16°C.
By matching the TOG rating to your nursery's climate, you can provide the perfect balance of comfort and safety for a restful night's sleep.
Experts suggest keeping a comfortable room temperature for a child’s room between 18°C and 22°C. Choose sleepwear that is TOG rated and layer with breathable pyjamas for optimal comfort. It's advised not to rely on cold hands or feet, as these are rarely accurate indicators of core warmth.
Instead, gently feel the back of your child’s neck or their chest. If they feel warm to the touch, they are at the optimal temperature. If they feel damp or sweaty, it's time to switch to a lower TOG rating or remove a layer.
This is only a guide. The number of clothing layers may vary according to a baby's health, their physiology & the temperature in the room. the right layers are essential to prevent overheating or waking up from the cold.
